What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Dental hygienists specialise in keeping your mouth clean and your gums healthy.
Here’s what you can expect from a visit:

  • Deep cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains

  • Advice on brushing, flossing, and diet habits

  • Preventive treatments like fluoride and scaling

  • Gum health assessments and maintenance

  • Support for managing bad breath and early gum disease

At our Poole BH17 practice, we offer both standard cleans and advanced periodontal treatments tailored to your needs.

Why Regular Hygiene Visits Matter

Hygienist appointments are essential – even if your teeth feel fine.
Here’s why:

  • Prevent gum disease and tooth loss

  • Remove stubborn plaque and calculus

  • Brighten your natural teeth by removing surface stains

  • Keep breath fresh and your mouth feeling clean

  • Maintain oral health between dentist check-ups

  • Help you keep dental work (like implants or bonding) in good condition

💡 Visiting every 6 months can make a big difference to your long-term oral health.

  • Wear braces, implants, or dentures

  • Are prone to tartar build-up or bleeding gums

  • Have early signs of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis)

NHS Dental Hygiene – What to Know

  • NHS hygiene care is only available if clinically necessary

  • You must be referred as part of a dental exam under NHS Band 1 or Band 2

  • It usually does not include full cosmetic cleaning or polishing

  • NHS hygiene slots are limited and often prioritised for patients with periodontal disease

📌 If you’re looking for fast, regular hygiene appointments in Poole, private care offers greater flexibility and comfort.

Although dental hygiene appointments can be provided both privately and via the NHS, availability and scope of treatment may vary depending on your needs and eligibility.
